Leo Strauss. Πολιτική φιλοσοφία & κρίση της νεοτερικότητας

O Leo Strauss (1899-1973) συνιστά μία κρίσιμη μορφή μέσα στον κανόνα της Ηπειρωτικής Φιλοσοφίας. Η μακρά πορεία ενός γερμανoεβραίου από τη Βαϊμάρη στην Αμερική δεν σηματοδότησε μόνο το «τραύμα» της Γερμανίας και της Ευρώπης από την τραγική εμπειρία του ναζισμού, αλλά μεταπολεμικά στις ΗΠΑ, σε ένα υψηλό ακαδημαϊκό συγκείμενο, και τη μετάβαση της σύγχρονης πολιτικής επιστήμης από την μπιχεβιοριστική προσέγγιση στην πολιτική φιλοσοφία. Μέσα στο έργο του, στο επίκεντρο αυτής της «στροφής», συντελείται η ολική «επιστροφή» στην κλασική πολιτική φιλοσοφία, το κλασικό φυσικό δίκαιο και τον αρχαίο φιλελευθερισμό. Αυτός ο «δεύτερος πλους» έλαβε χώρα με ενδιάμεσο σταθμό το μεσαιωνικό διαφωτισμό, ολοκληρώνοντας την πορεία του στο «πρόβλημα του Σωκράτη». Ουσιαστικά, το εναρκτήριο «τραύμα» μετατέθηκε μέσα στο πλατωνικό «τραύμα»: πώς είναι δυνατόν η Αθήνα, η πεμπτουσία της δημοκρατίας, να θανατώνει τον Σωκράτη; Ο Strauss αφιέρωσε όλη τη ζωή του στη διερεύνηση αυτού του ζητήματος, που συνιστά την ιδρυτική πράξη της κλασικής πολιτικής φιλοσοφίας. Μολονότι η «τραυματική» σχέση φιλοσοφίας και πολιτικής έχει ήδη τεθεί στα χρόνια της Βαϊμάρης ως το «θεολογικό πολιτικό πρόβλημα», ο ώριμος και ύστερος Strauss, στην αμερικανική πλέον φάση της σκέψης και του έργου του, τοποθέτησε το συνολικό διακύβευμα εκ νέου υπό την αιγίδα του σωκρατικού δαιμόνιου.
